When evaluating a clip-on earbud design or trying a sample, a rounded housing alone cannot tell you whether the fit will be comfortable and secure. Yinshidon offers complete clip-on headphones, including the A87. Understanding how this type of earbud fits means looking at its shape alongside the shape of the outer ear: where the front and rear pods make contact, and how the connecting bridge holds them in place.
Pinching discomfort mainly depends on where pressure acts and how it is distributed. An insecure fit depends on whether the earbud can resist sliding and rotation. Understanding these two relationships helps explain why a small change in position can feel different.
How Clip-On Earbuds Grip the Outer Ear
In open-ear clip-on designs held in place by a flexible curved bridge, the front pod faces the ear canal opening, the rear pod sits behind the ear, and the connecting bridge crosses the outer edge of the ear.

Clip-on wearing position: the front and rear pods sit on opposite sides of the outer ear, joined by a curved bridge.
During fitting, the front and rear pods spread apart, deforming the flexible bridge. The bridge’s elastic restoring force draws the pods back inward. The ear between them prevents them from returning to their relative positions before fitting, so both pods continue pressing against opposite sides of the ear, creating a grip.
The front pod sits near the concha, the hollow in the central part of the outer ear close to the ear canal opening. Its exact contact location varies with the earbud design and ear shape.
Why Pressure Is Greater in Some Spots
The outer ear has raised areas, hollows, and curved edges. Even a rounded earbud housing may make actual contact with only a small part of the ear. The apparent size of the housing is not the same as its actual contact area.

Side view of contact: where the front and rear pods touch the outer ear.
In basic mechanics, average pressure equals the force acting perpendicular to a contact area divided by that area. With the same force perpendicular to the contact surface, a smaller actual contact area produces higher average pressure. A local contour of the housing or bridge can also press into a raised part of the ear.
The feeling of pinching therefore needs to be understood in relation to contact location and shape. Pressure sensitivity also differs between regions of the concha, so clamping force alone cannot predict when each person will feel pain.
A Secure Fit Also Requires Resistance to Sliding and Rotation
Clamping force keeps the front and rear pods in contact with the ear, while friction along the contact surfaces resists sliding. Where the pods rest, and where the bridge crosses the ear’s edge, also affect the directions in which the earbud can move. If these effects cannot resist movement caused by shaking or contact, the earbud may slide down or rotate out of position.
A tight spot only shows that pressure is acting there. Whether it can prevent the whole earbud from moving also depends on where the other contacts are and which directions they can resist.
With other conditions unchanged, increasing clamping force can raise the maximum frictional resistance to sliding, but it may also increase pressure on the ear. If the shape presses into the wrong spot, tightening alone will not remove that localized pressure. Stability and comfort need to be considered together.
Changing Position Changes the Contact
Moving or rotating a clip-on earbud along the ear’s edge places the front and rear pods in different locations and changes the space through which the bridge passes. The spot where pressure was concentrated may shift, as may the contact relationships that limit sliding and rotation. The sound outlet’s orientation changes too.
Anthropometric research shows that outer ears differ not only in length and width but also in local curves, hollows, and earlobe shape. The same earbud shape can therefore produce different contact on different ears or in different wearing positions. Understanding clip-on ergonomics means considering earbud shape, outer-ear shape, and wearing position together.
